Deltarune Headcanons & Interpretations
In fandoms and derivative works, I love sticking close to the source material - I'm a bit of an Abberant for UTDR despite how ridiculous that is. I'm not intentionally elitist, it's just how I love things. Go invent 500 skeletons.
I hope you'd find these headcanons and interpretations interesting or fun!
Character Headcanons
For voice canons, see section below (sorry I'll learn to link to the HTML
Noelle
- I'm so glad Toby Fox didn't stick to her typical-pretty-girl concept art and made her face dorky. I remember reading a Reddit comment saying Noelle looks like that kind of girl who isn't super attractive, but when you're surrounded by normal kids in school, she looks quite pretty.
Voice Headcanons & Casting
Susie
I grew up with cisgirls who have low-sounding, rough voices you'd not call feminine, but doesn't sound cismale either. I haven't heard a good Susie yet for me - a lot of Susie dubs sound either typical cisfemale or trying to capture that voice but just don't naturally have that.
I'm sure there's a bunch of VA & actresses that'd fit my version of Susie, just can't think of any right now.
Ralsei
Initially I liked him sounding slightly androgynous, given how cute and fluffy he is, but realized that most real-life soft boys have cismale voices (duh)! Softbois and femboys don't need to be or necessarily want to be androgynous-presenting. So for this scringly dingly, I like high-pitched voices you'd hear from many real-life cismales.
Though cartoonish voices also feel very fitting!
For me, all of these are awesome Ralseis:
- Caleb Hyles (singing voice in the "Raise Up Your Bat" cover by RichaadEB, Caleb Hyoles & LilVMills
- AngelonMarzVA
- Probe (also a “Raise Up Your Bat” singing)
- Siejax
Noelle
I really don't like her voice to sound like an anime dub, or sound too sweet or cute! Her character has a lot of nuance and feels more like a real person than even Susie, arguably (probably because she's the original Hero girl of the Legend or something), and I want that to reflect in her voice. I want her to sound like a real-life teenage girl.
Again, I know that voice exists, but I can't think of a casting atm.
Berdly
The cliche nerdy cartoonish ones.
Spamton
There was this Reddit comment I felt was a great analysis of how Spamton would sound like, given what he was inspired by shitty 2010s YouTube Poop & salesmen tropes. If I could find it I'll put it here.
Characteristics of my ideal Spamton voice:
- {{Brackets}} being voice clips from his memory (he quotes a string from Alex Rochen's question in the Spamton Sweepstakes Q&A for another Q&A question).
- Bitcrushed. Low-quality audio. (Mail in your spam folder tends to be poorly written)
- Glitchy stuttering
- High-pitched and cartoony. (1) Being a fun-loving, cartoonish li'l guy fits him as Tenna's family-friendly TV show partner. (2) His voice in his songs tends to be high-pitched and cartoon-like
- Broken insane man who {{lost control of}} his {{life}}.
Given that, this is my favorite interpretation (though I do have a preference for it being slightly less Gilbert Gottfried, even if I think that voice matches very much the source material more):
While not my ideal Spamton, I think this voice is very underrated. It's utter trash:
Spamton NEO
I love interpretations of Spamton NEO where he's glitchy (he just uploaded himself in a new body), inhuman and scary, and filled with desperation, insanity, with a sense of being a broken man in the background.
Plus, lower-pitch voice to reflect the change in voice font.
Tenna
As an abberant I like sticking closely to both Toby Fox's official/canon voice and (for as much as is possible) Tenna's voice font:
- Chapter 3's Feacher Presentation
- Fangamer commercial for HERO figurines (non-canon but official)
- Voice font
Characteristics of my ideal Tenna voice:
- At least similar to Toby Fox's Tenna voice
- High-pitched by default
- Cartoonish manner of speaking (e.g., cadence, tone)
- Something that screams {{[nostalgic]}} {{[TV]}} (e.g. the audio quality crappy 80s monospeaker, a stereotypical transatlantic accent)
- A TV showman when it's needed (look at his word art! his 3D graphics!), but can sound a somewhat serious during serious times
- As my friend said, "people don't make this man whiny/pathetic enough smh"
Aside from the official Toby Fox voice, I'm partial to these interpretations:
- Turbobox
- Christopher Niosi's Robbin Williams interpretation - though I'd prefer it less frequent, I like the aspect of him being a bombastic showman referencing TV pop culture
